Why shooting videos are still on social media

Peter R. Pictures of De Vries fighting for his life, shooting inside a school, and being murdered. We often see on social websites. On the one hand, due to the volume: if one video is deleted, the next is already uploaded. Social media sites, on the other hand, do not seem to respond quickly enough.

Live broadcast footage

The most notable example is the shooting at a mosque in New Zealand in 2019. Facebook was completely destroyed as it provided a site to broadcast the shooter’s horrific act live for 17 minutes. Under no circumstances should such images appear on social networking sites. The only question is to what extent the platforms will compensate for this. During filming earlier this week, the area was less dramatic: the shooter wanted to do a livestream on Twitch, but got less than two minutes when he committed the crime.

You are lucky, you might think. There were only 22 more spectators. Unfortunately it does not work that way. Of those 22, there were still audiences who wanted to make the images public, so that serious images of the shocking event still spread on all sorts of social media. Millions of people read exactly what the shooter wanted and intended on Twitter and Facebook. In the way the shooter wants. What exactly should be hidden, many believe.

Many different videos

The tricky part is that you only need one copy of a video to distribute indefinitely. At the same time, the question is why artificial intelligence does not work well in this regard. How can a photo be identified from a few pixels on the internet, as it should be technically possible with the frames of the video? YouTube can answer that. Since shooting at Buffalo, it has taken over 400 different types of videos offline. They edit and re-record videos in the hope that they will be online.

Why Twitch can take it offline so much faster than Facebook, Twitch is mainly about games, so the content that comes out of it stands out. Facebook users often post different types of content and topics, which makes it harder to catch up. It is not possible for social media to immediately take such bad pictures offline or prevent them from appearing online. These sites are too big for that. Fortunately, they know where to find each other: for example, they now share hashes, which are a kind of fingerprint on a video, so it’s easy to quickly pick up unwanted content offline. They are doing this jointly at the Global Anti-Terrorism Forum, which was established in 2017.

Always on the retina

However, the problem does not go away completely. After all, we interact with people. Some feel that it is unacceptable for the next of kin to share these images or that people do not want to keep the images in their minds for years (think Pim Fordin or John F. Kennedy, these are images we all share in one piece. See you again in a second). Another thinks that one should also look at the horrible things that happen on earth. Some people think this is a good lesson, source news like this. Others like to see it for the same reason that we often experience traffic congestion in the Netherlands: because there are visitors on the other route.

Fortunately, social media is finding more and more ways to take videos offline as quickly as possible. It is a good development that they incorporate themselves into that GIFCT. During the buffalo shoot, the organization’s ‘Content Incident Protocol’ was activated 2.5 hours after the start of filming. Then, for each new version created by the people, a new ‘hash’ was created and shared within the GIFCT.

Share fingerprints

It’s hard when you work with media that is social and created to ensure quick and high engagement. In addition, the police, for example, are sometimes a reason for people to share content. Although the police always point out to themselves that images should not be shared on social media, they should be sent directly to the police.

Sometimes people forget about their speed and willingness to help, or they hope that more people will look at the pictures and find the fugitive quickly. Therefore, the appearance of violent images online is not always for bad purposes, but in the end it will promote even more evil intentions.

It is believed that GIFCT will be more responsive when these types of situations occur. You can do it together rather than doing it alone and although social media usually competes with each other, it is better that they do not do it for this purpose. If they compete, allow this content to be taken offline as soon as possible.
