Sarina Wickman was named Women’s Soccer Coach of the Year at the FIFA Expo in Paris on Monday evening. The 53-year-old England national coach, who won the European title with his team last summer, won the prestigious prize for the third time.
Wiegmann is one of the contenders along with Sonia Bombaster (Leon) and Pia Suntage (Brazil). Last year, the Dutchman, who already worked for the English Football Association, had to settle for third place behind Chelsea’s Emma Hayes and Luis Cortes (FC Barcelona and Ukraine).
In 2017 and 2020, Wikmann won the prestigious FIFA award for her performances with the Orange Women. Under the leadership of the coach from The Hague, the Netherlands became European champions in 2017. Two years later, the Orange Women reached the World Cup final, losing to the United States (0-2).
Last summer, Wiegmann won every match at the European Championship in his home country with England, including the final against Germany (2-1). For the first time in 56 years, England’s football team won the championship. Wiegmann became the first national coach with two different countries to excel in Europe.
Weigman put the gifts together
After the European title, Wiegmann won various individual prizes. Among other things, he was named UEFA European Coach of the Year.
In addition, Wykeman was appointed a Commander of the Most Excellent Command of the British Empire (CBE) in December. It is the third highest royal honor in England.
In the Netherlands, Wiekmann was not named sports coach of the year. At the Dutch Sports Gala, the prize went to Jeroen Otter after winning four Olympic short track medals in Beijing.
